New pickelball courts weeks away from opening!

Awake the Lake 501 c3 has always been here to support and enhance what Centennial Park was already providing. Our mission is: “To salvage, restore and recreate the natural majesty of the namesake of our town. To prevent any future significant water dissipation due to drought and other natural causes. To enhance and update surrounding recreation areas.”.  As we looked out on our wonderful park, we began to imagine what else we could add to the community that would bring people together, enhance the grounds and encourage healthy living. With Pickle ball becoming a national phenomenon, professional Pickle Ball courts were the first thought that came to mind. It is one of the few sports that a 9-year-old youth can enjoy and play with a 79-year-old senior. The ability to play for free on tournament-level courts is not currently available in the Tri Lakes area.  As a Non-profit team, we wanted to bring these courts to Centennial Park offering easy access and free play for all.  We also knew there was a great need for a community bathroom on the West side of the Lake, so this was incorporated into the vision.

Working as a cohesive team with Palmer Lake Parks department and the Town of Palmer Lake the exact location was selected and approved.  As of July 1st, the courts have been poured and fencing will go up shortly along with sidewalks and the final color coating of the courts. They will need to cure for 45 days before play can begin.  The community bathroom is ready to begin construction and will hopefully be complete, by end of Summer.  It is our goal to have a grand opening celebration, but that date is still TBD.

New Staff Gauge installed

Volunteers recently installed a new Staf Gauge! The staff gauge will measure the water level of the lake. We will collect data to see how weather affects groundwater and how groundwater affects lake levels to better forecast how the lake may look as droughts ensue. This information will assist us in being better able to take steps to maintain it. We used to have to guess as to how much water is in the lake, now we will know.
